SCARLETT is a 36-month research project aimed at developing an open-source platform for the secure exchange and utilization of Smart City data through Common Data Spaces.

The platform will support secure data sharing, privacy protection, decentralized governance, assessment of data and provider trustworthiness, as well as pricing mechanisms and fair value distribution. At the same time, it will leverage technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT)/Blockchain, and Federated Learning, while supporting interoperability from IoT devices to cloud infrastructures.

The operation of SCARLETT will be demonstrated through three Smart City applications that will combine data from sensors, telematics systems, and external sources.

These applications will focus on smart waste management and collection, smart parking, and road safety at pedestrian crossings, emphasizing the secure use of data, effective data analytics, and privacy protection.

Type and Scope of Activities

• Privacy Protection: Development of mechanisms and policies for personal data protection, privacy-enhancing technologies, and a consent management framework.
• Smart Waste Management: Development of an application for more efficient waste collection, utilizing IoT data and predictive models for dynamic route planning.
• Smart Parking: Contribution to the development of a smart parking application, using sensor data to monitor and predict parking space availability.
• Road Safety: Development of an application to enhance safety at pedestrian crossings through the integration of traffic, environmental, and meteorological data.
• Pilot Testing: Design of the pilot implementation plan and participation in the installation, testing, and evaluation of the applications.
• Research & Intellectual Property: Coordination of research excellence and exploitation activities, including patent application processes and the management of intellectual property rights.

SCARLETT is implemented under the “Research – Innovate” Action, Intervention II: “Partnerships between Businesses and Research Organizations.”
