smart-ALICE
Circular economy digital ecosystem for sustainable management of ICT equipment
smart-ALICE is a 9-month pilot project that aims to create a transparent and trustworthy circular ecosystem in the IT sector in Grenoble. Since 70% of the environmental footprint of the IT comes from the equipment, the project meets the French regulatory requirements that impose at least 20% supplies of remanufactured equipment.
Detailed project description
In this context, it introduces an innovative “digital passport” system for ICT equipment. Through IoT tags (QR, NFC, and RFID), full traceability of equipment is achieved across its entire lifecycle, from decommissioning and refurbishment to redistribution and reuse. End-to-end tracking enables quality certification, strengthens trust in refurbished equipment, and provides verifiable environmental data, such as resource savings and avoided CO₂ emissions.
The solution includes a digital marketplace interconnected with municipal ERP systems, enabling efficient inventory management, procurement alignment, and automated regulatory compliance. At the same time, it integrates behavioral change mechanisms such as gamification, eco-performance dashboards, and quality labeling, encouraging participation from more than 150 users and 15 stakeholders.
The project targets Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 9, delivering a scalable and fully operational model that reduces electronic waste and strengthens trust in refurbished equipment.

The project was implemented within the framework of the European programme CLIMABOROUGH and funded through cascade funding by the European Union and the CINEA agency. CLIMABOROUGH aims to bridge the gap between the design and implementation of urban innovations, with a focus on climate change adaptation and mitigation.
