SmartLINA
Digital artificial intelligence platform for reducing the carbon footprint through active citizen participation
The smartLINA project is a nine-month pilot program aimed at increasing citizen participation in the Zero Carbon Challenge initiative in Issy-les-Moulineaux, by transitioning from traditional, high-cost workshops to an efficient digital ecosystem.
Detailed project description
To address the problem of low participation (below 1%), the project is developing a hybrid platform (mobile and web) that utilizes behavioral analysis, gamification mechanisms, and AI-powered micro-coaching, with the goal of engaging at least 300 citizens in reducing their carbon footprint.
The solution is fully integrated with the city’s OpenDataSoft portal, providing users with real-time visualizations of their environmental impact, as well as the ability to compare cities.
By combining data from IoT sensors with actions reported by users, smartLINA creates a dynamic feedback loop between citizens and municipal services, transforming individual behavioral changes into measurable progress for the climate at the urban level.
The project results in a proven TRL 9 service, offering a scalable and privacy-compliant model for European cities, with the aim of strengthening long-term citizen engagement in climate action through digital innovation.
Type and scope of work provided
- Software Development: Creation of a hybrid platform (mobile/web) with AI-powered micro-coaching mechanisms and gamification to monitor environmental behaviors
- Data Integration: Interoperability with OpenDataSoft for Synchronizing Municipal Data and Carbon Footprint Calculations
- IoT Implementation: Integration of air quality sensors and smart waste management systems to provide real-time data
- Behavioral Design: Development of interactive digital workshops and mechanisms for “friendly competition” among citizens
- Ecosystem Coordination: Organizing co-design initiatives and involving at least 300 citizens from key stakeholder groups
- Impact Analysis: Creation of an anonymized reporting framework for measuring emissions reductions and development of a plan for scalability at the European level
The smartLINA project is funded through cascading funds as part of the CLIMABOROUGH project, which is co-funded by the European Union and CINEA.
CLIMABOROUGH aims to bridge the gap between the design and implementation of urban innovations, particularly in relation to climate change and the need to adapt to and mitigate its impacts.
