WATERWISE
Smart platform for water resource management for climate change adaptation
The WaterWise project (Intelligent Water Balance Assessment for Climate Change Adaptation) introduces an advanced AI-driven digital platform designed for monitoring, forecasting, and optimizing water resource management under climate stress conditions.
Scope of the project
Through the integration of artificial intelligence, IoT technologies, and hydrological modelling, WaterWise dynamically assesses water inflows and outflows — such as precipitation, evapotranspiration, and sector-based consumption — generating real-time water balance profiles for specific regions.
By leveraging environmental data, sensor networks, and predictive analytics, the system provides decision-makers with accurate and locally tailored information regarding water availability, consumption trends, and the risk of imbalance.
Its architecture supports the simulation of future climate scenarios, enabling early planning, efficient resource allocation, and the implementation of appropriate policies.
A key differentiating feature of WaterWise is the linkage between real-time environmental data monitoring and AI-driven forecasts, creating a dynamic decision-support environment for municipalities, utilities, and environmental authorities.
The project contributes to strengthening resilience against climate change by promoting efficient use of water resources, preventing shortages, and protecting vulnerable ecosystems.
Type and scope of work provided
- Development of an integrated platform combining IoT sensors, artificial intelligence analytics, and hydrological forecasting for water balance management
- Real-time data collection from meteorological and environmental sensors, combined with historical and satellite data
- Implementation of machine learning models to forecast water supply, demand, and water imbalance risks
- Design of dashboards and digital tools for public authorities, including scenario planning capabilities and policy evaluation features
- Pilot deployment in selected areas, including technical validation, user training, and continuous platform improvement
WaterWise provides stakeholders with the necessary digital infrastructure and information for effective water resource governance. Its scalable and modular architecture enables deployment across different geographic and climatic contexts, aligning with European priorities for sustainable development and climate change adaptation.
The project is implemented under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU (Project code: ΥΠ3ΤΑ-0560460, budget: 1,800,000€).
