Kalymnos XR: Digital Cultural and Tourism Experiences
From the depths of the sea to historic monuments: Innovative VR/AR Applications for Kalymnos
The Municipality of Kalymnos is implementing an innovative project that utilizes Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies, aiming to showcase and promote the island’s rich cultural and tourism heritage. Through interactive applications, citizens and visitors will have the opportunity to discover the history, traditions, and natural environment of Kalymnos in an innovative and immersive way.
Scope of Work
Virtual Diving Application (VR Diving App):
Users can virtually “dive” and discover finds within fictional shipwrecks associated with significant historical periods (Neolithic era, Antiquity, Byzantine period, etc.), highlighting both the diving tradition and contemporary diving activities of Kalymnos.
Interactive Augmented Reality Digital Map (AR Cultural Map):
The map will provide audiovisual content on monuments, cultural and archaeological sites, cultural events, as well as the island’s diving tradition. Users will be able to access it from both computers and mobile devices.
Interactive Documentary on Diving:
A multimedia documentary showcasing the life of sponge divers, the traditions, and the cultural identity of Kalymnos.
Objectives and Benefits:
- Enhancing the tourism experience through technology.
- Increasing visits to sites of cultural interest.
- Attracting a new generation of tourists through “experiential tourism.”
- Promoting cultural heritage and raising awareness of its protection.
The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and national resources through the Public Investment Programme.
