Marathon: Digital Upgrade of the Mati Area

Marathon: Digital Upgrade of the Mati Area

With intelligent prevention systems, resilient infrastructure and rapid crisis management mechanisms, the Mati area of the Municipality of Marathon is strengthening its resilience and securing its place on the map of digital transformation.

The coastal settlement in Eastern Attica is entering a new digital era through modern technological tools and innovative applications designed to enhance safety, civil protection and sustainable development.

Scope of Work

The project leverages smart city technologies to improve water resource management, protect the natural environment and enhance the Municipality’s operational efficiency. All infrastructures and systems are interconnected through a single digital platform, enabling continuous monitoring, process automation and real-time decision-making.

Smart Irrigation

The project includes advanced irrigation systems featuring remote control, automated scheduling and environmental sensors. The infrastructure enables optimal water consumption, immediate fault detection and sustainable management of available natural resources. Irrigation is dynamically adjusted according to the needs of green areas, reducing water waste while ensuring maximum efficiency.

AI-powered Fire Detection

Outdoor PTZ cameras equipped with artificial intelligence algorithms are installed at critical locations throughout the area to enable the early detection of fire and smoke. The system analyses video streams in real time, identifies suspicious incidents and immediately alerts the Control Centre, contributing to effective wildfire prevention and response.

Wireless Communication Network

The city’s communication infrastructure is supported by broadband PTP and PTMP wireless links, ensuring secure and uninterrupted data transmission between all deployed systems. The network includes routers, antennas and high-availability communication equipment, enabling the reliable operation of all smart city applications.

Water Metering Telemetry

Digital water meters record water consumption in real time and transmit the data to the central management system. Integration with the billing software enables automated consumption calculations, immediate leak detection and improved customer service.

Integrated Management Platform

All smart infrastructures are connected to a central platform for data collection, analysis and management. A unified digital dashboard provides real-time system monitoring, interactive maps, automated alerts and operational reports, supporting rapid and informed decision-making.

Mobile Applications for Citizens and Technical Teams

Citizens have access to a mobile application for monitoring their water consumption and receiving notifications about potential anomalies. At the same time, municipal technical teams use a dedicated mobile application providing fault maps, alerts, intervention instructions and on-site work reporting.

Central Control Centre Equipment

The central control centre is equipped with modern servers, monitoring screens, networking equipment and security systems. The infrastructure supports the uninterrupted operation of the platform and the continuous supervision of all smart city systems.

The project is being implemented in collaboration with NOVA ICT and is funded through the Special Relief Fund for the Victims of the Wildfires of 23–24 July 2018.
