Korydallos Smart City: Smart Solutions for Sustainable Urban Development

Korydallos Smart City: Smart Solutions for Sustainable Urban Development

Targeted interventions being implemented in the Municipality of Korydallos aim to stimulate economic activity, revitalize public spaces, and improve the quality of life of its citizens.

Scope of Work

Smart Waste Management System

The Municipality will install new sensors as part of its smart waste management system, enabling the monitoring of waste bin fill levels and the centralized management of waste collection routes. The system will support the delivery of high-quality services to citizens while significantly increasing recycling rates and reducing operational costs. It will consist of independent and autonomous sensors installed on each waste bin. The sensors will be mounted on the bin lids and will measure both fill level and internal temperature, allowing the early detection of potential waste fires. As a result, waste bins will be continuously monitored and any sudden changes will be detected promptly.

Controlled Parking System for the Intervention Area

A controlled parking system will be deployed to serve the intervention area, where the Municipality’s Commercial Centre will operate. The project includes the implementation of a smart automated parking availability system for a pilot area comprising ten (10) on-street parking spaces and one (1) electronic information display installed at one of the entrances to the Commercial Centre. Specifically, the system includes:

  • On-street parking sensors
  • Repeaters
  • Sensor Data Collection Unit
  • Electronic driver information display

Municipal Fleet Management System

The Municipal Fleet Management System consists of fleet management software and a pilot installation of five (5) sensors on municipal vehicles, transmitting their location and various operational parameters in real time. The software collects and processes this information, providing:

  • Detailed vehicle usage and fuel consumption reports
  • Early fault detection before vehicles become inoperable
  • Efficient maintenance scheduling and procurement planning for consumables and spare parts

For the municipal vehicle fleet (such as waste collection vehicles, ambulances, buses, service vehicles, etc.), the sensors continuously transmit their location and operational parameters in real time. By analysing these data, potential faults can be detected before vehicles are taken out of service, while maintenance activities and the procurement of consumables and spare parts are planned more efficiently based on actual vehicle usage. The sensors are equipped with GPS and are installed through the appropriate vehicle interface to collect all required operational data in real time.

A New Era for the Municipality of Korydallos

Through this project, the Municipality of Korydallos is embracing digital transformation and entering a new era of operation that is:

  • more modern,
  • more citizen-friendly,
  • more sustainable, and
  • more efficient.

The Municipality enhances citizens’ quality of life, promotes innovation, and lays the foundations for a smart and people-centred city.
