Peristeri Smart City: Urban Mobility & Smart Parking Management

Peristeri Smart City: Urban Mobility & Smart Parking Management

The Municipality of Peristeri modernises urban mobility and parking management through smart city technologies.

The project forms part of the broader Smart Cities initiative and aims to modernise urban mobility and parking management through the use of digital technologies. It includes the deployment and integration of infrastructure such as parking sensors, electronic driver information signs, mobile applications, electronic payment services and web platforms for specific user groups. The system is designed to improve accessibility, facilitate citizens’ daily activities and promote the more efficient use of public space.

Scope of Work

Electronic Driver Information Sign

The electronic information sign provides drivers with real-time information on parking space availability within the area of interest. It is LED-based and installed at key locations throughout the city, offering visual guidance by displaying the number of available parking spaces at each location. It supports at least two display lines capable of showing numbers and symbols and communicates wirelessly with the Central Information System.

Parking Space Management Subsystem

This subsystem includes the infrastructure (software and hardware) required to record, monitor and manage parking spaces, including dedicated spaces for specific user groups such as permanent residents and persons with disabilities. It enables the allocation, supervision and management of parking spaces through a web-based environment and is fully integrated with the Municipality’s central information system. It also includes parking space mapping, reporting capabilities and user management tools.

Parking Availability Information & Electronic Payments – Mobile Application

The mobile application (Android and iOS) enables citizens and visitors to:

  • View real-time parking space availability
  • Navigate directly to an available parking space
  • Make electronic parking payments
  • Create a user profile and access their transaction history

The application is connected to parking sensors and the central database, ensuring the delivery of up-to-date information.

Web Application for Parking Permit Requests

The web application allows citizens to submit and manage requests for dedicated parking permits, including:

  • Permanent residents of designated areas
  • Persons with disabilities (PwD)
  • Specific professional user categories

Users submit applications through an online form, upload the required supporting documents and monitor the status of their requests. The system supports an approval workflow managed by the relevant municipal departments.

Parking Occupancy Detection Sensors

These sensors are installed on the road surface or within parking spaces and detect vehicle presence using magnetometers or radar technology. They transmit occupancy data to the central system to update parking availability in real time. The sensors are autonomous, energy-efficient and designed to withstand adverse weather conditions.

Sensors for Preventing Illegal Parking at Accessible Ramps

Specialised sensors or systems—such as cameras with occupancy detection or automated barriers—are installed at pedestrian crossings and accessible ramps for persons with disabilities. Their purpose is to prevent illegal parking by generating alerts for the municipal control centre or automatically notifying the municipal police.

The project is implemented in cooperation with Vodafone and is funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”.
