Smart Paggaio: A Municipality Looking Ahead

Smart Paggaio: A Municipality Looking Ahead

The Municipality of Paggaio is embracing digital transformation

The Municipality of Paggaio is equipping itself with new smart city tools and modern technologies, accelerating its transition into the digital era. The project implements a comprehensive digital transformation programme aimed at enhancing urban mobility, improving municipal services, and promoting the sustainable management of resources and data. At its core is the development of a unified digital management platform that interoperates with all individual systems, consolidating their data to enable real-time monitoring and decision-making.

Scope of Work

Smart Pedestrian Crossings

The project includes the installation of 18 smart pedestrian crossings at selected locations to improve pedestrian safety through automatic pedestrian detection and automatic visual and audible warning signals. Using machine vision technology, the crossings detect pedestrians in real time and immediately alert both pedestrians and vehicle drivers. In addition, integrated sensors collect real-time traffic and environmental data.

Municipal Fleet Management

Telematics units and onboard displays will be installed in 38 municipal vehicles. Using GPS and GPRS technologies, vehicle data will be transmitted in real time to a dedicated fleet management platform, providing continuous information on each vehicle’s location, speed and route. This solution helps reduce fuel consumption and optimise fleet operations.

Digital City Guide

The Digital City Guide consists of a central platform and dedicated applications designed to promote local businesses, showcase the area’s points of interest and highlight the Municipality’s key characteristics. Particular emphasis is placed on sectors such as tourism, manufacturing and local production. Businesses and entrepreneurs are provided with the opportunity to present their products and services through the platform.

Smart Irrigation System

A comprehensive smart irrigation system will be deployed in selected areas. Using 75 sensors, the system collects real-time data to optimise irrigation and reduce water consumption across municipal boreholes and irrigation networks.

Central Smart City Platform

The platform serves as the project’s central hub, collecting, analysing and visualising data from all connected smart city systems. It supports an open and scalable architecture, interoperability with third-party systems, event and alert management, and the generation of key performance indicators.

A Comprehensive Step Towards a Smart and Sustainable Municipality

Through the “Digital Transformation Actions” project, the Municipality of Paggaio is taking a decisive step towards the future by investing in technology, innovation and sustainability. The new digital infrastructure—including smart pedestrian crossings, fleet management, the digital city guide and the smart irrigation system—creates the profile of a municipality that leverages technology to improve citizens’ daily lives. Paggaio is becoming a model of digital transformation and modern local governance, enhancing both quality of life and the area’s outward-looking development.

The project is funded by the European Union (ERDF) and national resources through the Public Investment Programme.
