Mapping and Routing System for Persons with Disabilities

Inclusive mobility is culture

SafeAccess is an integrated and innovative solution that leverages Geographic Information System technologies, routing, and smart sensors, with the aim of improving the everyday lives of people with disabilities and reduced mobility. The system contributes to the creation of friendlier and more human-centred cities, promoting social equality, safety, and active citizen participation.

“SafeAccess | The Digital Guide to an Accessible City”

Key Features

SafeAccess combines digital mapping, smart routing, and active citizen participation, creating a unified accessibility ecosystem. Each feature has been designed to respond to the real needs of people with disabilities, their companions, as well as visitors to the city.

1 Critical Infrastructure Mapping

The system includes a complete geospatial database that records and evaluates:

  • pavements with technical characteristics, such as width, slope, and surface condition,
  • ramps and crossings based on suitability and ease-of-access criteria,
  • pedestrian streets and public service areas that support everyday needs,
  • parking spaces for people with disabilities and their real-time availability,
  • public buildings and services, as well as places of cultural and tourist interest.

Mapping is carried out using modern GIS techniques and organised into thematic layers, so that users can easily select the information that interests them.

2 Dynamic Routing & Navigation

The SafeAccess routing application enables users to select a starting point and destination through an interactive map. The system then suggests:

  • the shortest accessible route, minimising travel time,
  • the safest route, avoiding obstacles and recommending the most suitable infrastructure,
  • alternative routes, depending on the user’s preferences and needs.
  • Navigation takes place in real time, through a user-friendly environment that can be used from smartphones, tablets, and computers.

3 Active Citizen Participation

  • Through the platform, users can report obstacles, damage, or violations that hinder movement, such as a damaged ramp or an obstacle on a pavement.
  • Reports are stored and displayed in real time.
  • The Municipality is informed immediately and can schedule improvement works.
  • A communication channel is created between the Municipality and citizens, strengthening transparency and cooperation.

4 Smart Parking Sensors

SafeAccess integrates underground or above-ground wireless sensors, which detect whether a parking space for people with disabilities is occupied or available and send real-time data to the central system.

In this way, control of illegal parking is strengthened, the work of the Municipal Police is facilitated, and spaces that are vital for people with disabilities are protected.

5 System User-Friendliness & Accessibility

SafeAccess has been designed with emphasis on ease of use:

  • user-friendly interface, with no need for specialised knowledge,
  • compatibility with mobile devices and full functionality via the internet,
  • compliance with international digital accessibility standards so that it can be used by everyone, without exclusions,
  • option to display in light or dark mode, with large icons and easy navigation.

6 Open Architecture & Interoperability

The platform follows the principles of open and modular architecture, aiming at:

  • Scalability: ability to integrate new functions in the future.
  • Interoperability: compatibility with third-party systems via RESTful API.
  • Open data: ability to make mapping data available for reuse by citizens, researchers, and businesses.

Benefits for Users

SafeAccess has been designed to meet the needs of a wide group of users:

  • people with disabilities and reduced mobility, such as wheelchair users, elderly people, and people with quadriplegia,
  • assistants and companions of people with disabilities,
  • parents with prams or citizens who face mobility difficulties,
  • visitors and tourists seeking reliable information on accessible routes and services.

Main benefits:

  • unobstructed and safe movement around the city,
  • easy access to information on accessible points of interest,
  • ability to actively participate by reporting problems,
  • support for accessible tourism and strengthening of social inclusion.

Benefits for the Municipality

For Local Government, SafeAccess is a tool for modernising and improving services:

  • strengthening the Municipality’s social profile through meaningful support for vulnerable groups,
  • immediate information and decision-making based on real-time data,
  • planning and implementation of projects to improve urban accessibility through targeted interventions,
  • promotion of sustainable mobility and soft transport instead of private car use,
  • compliance with the principles of e-government and open data.

SafeAccess is not simply a technological project, but an investment in social cohesion and quality of life. It creates a smart city where mobility is inclusive, and all citizens enjoy equal access to services, infrastructure, and culture.

With SafeAccess, every Municipality gains a powerful tool that combines technology, social responsibility, and strategic development, leading it into a new era of accessible urban mobility.
